In my classrooms I strive to create safe spaces in which we critically engage with the topics at hand in a respectful but robust manner.
What does that mean? It means that I encourage debate and conversation. Though there are certainly fundamental ideas and concepts students must learn, I work to foster active learning environments in which students feel comfortable questioning everything.
In my classes students have staged ethics debates, reported on sensitive topics, produced blog posts, created multimedia reporting about their community, and led classroom discussions on everything from Hannah Arendt's reporting for Eichmann in Jerusalem to Nicki Minaj's "Whats good?" interaction with Miley Cyrus. All of these activities are designed to help students see the knowledge they're gaining in the classroom not as some inert mass, but as malleable and evolving.
I've taught a series of both research and skills classes and my approach in all of them is informed by the revised Bloom's Taxonomy. I know in the beginning of the semester my students are going to be focused on remembering facts and ideas; by the end I hope I’ve given them what they need to critically evaluate what they’ve learned and to begin creating new connections to concepts and ideas they’ve culled from other experiences. It is that expansion of knowledge, and the ability to foster the connections needed for that expansion, that is the ultimate goal of my work as an educator.
